The Vaccine Trial Centre (VTC), a clinical facility under the Faculty of Tropical Medicine, Mahidol University, was established in February 1984 to provide a dedicated site for testing newly developed vaccines requiring evaluation in human volunteers. Full operations began around September–October 1986, with the first admission of volunteers on 3 November 1986. Located in Bangkok, the VTC is the first and only facility of its kind in Thailand, the region, and among developing countries. At present, it serves as one of the clinical trial research sites of the HIV Vaccine Trials Network (HVTN), supported by the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) through MU-CRC, MHRP-CTU, HVTN, and DAIDS.
